Canal Place is Maryland’s first Certified Heritage Area and incorporates the C&O Canal National Historic Park and Visitors’ Center, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and more. It is at the nexus of the C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage walk and bike trails.

The Western Maryland Railroad Scenic Railroad is a round trip excursion, originating from downtown Cumberland that offers an exciting mix of mountain scenery and rich transportation history. It stops at the Thrasher Museum and returns.

The Washington Street Historic District is comprised of numerous high-style examples of mid-19th and early 20th-century architectural styles, ranging from Greek Revival to Victorian, Colonial Revival to bungalows. The William Gilchrist Mansion is a charming early 19th-century Federal mansion on Washington Street. The home now functions as an art gallery, library and landscaped gardens. The mansion has a rotating schedule of art exhibits from various media and theme-oriented presentations. Open for tours, the Gordon Roberts House built in 1867, is one of a small group of Second Empire style homes located on Washington Street and provides a glimpse of life during the height of local industry and commerce.
