Do you love New York’s Christmas store windows?
Can you imagine – many of them will end up in landfill?
Gary Baer, a Myersdale, PA toy store owner, has been buying old window displays for many years, rescuing them from the landfill, refurbishing them, and offering them for display. He currently has a collection of about 40 different window displays illustrating about 30 different stories.
You can see them at Gary’s museum, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children and students. (More information, call 1-866-59STORY.)
Allegany Museum is lucky enough to house one of Gary’s finds – scenes from Sleeping Beauty, featuring mechanized Sleeping Beauty characters, originally displayed in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. It is very rare for such a display to be intact.
You can see it, and press the buttons to see the tableaux come to life, at Allegany Museum, 3 Pershing St, Cumberland MD, Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 to 4, and Sundays 1 to 4 – all free!!
